■ ■ their minds? "Am I going
to birdie, bogey, chip, or slice?
Who knows, maybe the ball will
slip off the tee." Maybe they all
thought they would make a hole-
in-one.
Although conditioning was not a
problem in golf, the team worked
hard for approximately an hour
after school every day, not only
learning about the game itself, but
also about dedication and
competition.
This all paid off for senior Shelby
Mertins, the only girl to qualify for
md place in the state tournament.
"I qualified for the state
tournament by finishing second in
the district tournament," Mertins
said. "I was really happy when I
qualified, but at the same time I
was disappointed because the team
wasn't going."
Coach Peterson was proud of
Mertins, but this was the first year
that the girls hadn't gone to state
as a team since he had been
coaching at Ralston. He felt the
team was young and
inexperienced, but did rather well
with a 5-2 dual record.
On April 29 the boys' golf team
competed at Metro, finishing 11th
with a score of 347. Senior John
Hymans, who shot 85, led Ralston
and junior Kirby Smith followed
closely with an 86.
Turning in a fifth place score of
334, the boys battled their last
invitational of the season hosted by
Lewis Central.
The boys' golf team ended its
season with a 5-1 overall record
and a second place finish in the
Federal Division of the Metro
Conference.
Using an iron at par three, senior Shelby
Mertins sends the ball flying oft the tee at the
state tournament held at Benson Golf Course.
