Business majors may not enjoy reading
Milton and biology majors may sigh as they
study the fall of the Roman Empire, but hu
manities’ classes nevertheless provide all stu
dents with a broad-spectrum of knowledge.
Though classes unrelated to one’s major sometimes seem
irrelevant, tedious, or even boring, they prepare students
for their future in ways that many may never imagine.
However, some non-humanities’ majors understand the
importance of these classes. “1 am an elementary educa
tion major,” Missy McHugh said. “I think taking
classes like psychology help prepare me for my students
in the future. I’ll be able to identify a student who may
have a psychological problem. It will also, Lord willing,
help me with my family some day.”
But for humanities’ majors, what some students
refer to as a “general major” takes on special meaning.
“Some people may use the humanities as an easy route
to a degree, but there is so much more to it,” Ethan
Green said. “The beauty of a humanities’ degree is that
H
u
it opens up all sorts of opportunities.” For many hu
m
manities’ majors, their choice of study propels them to
a
n
ward a specific goal; but for all, it serves as a foundation
itie
to move forward. Tabitha Pontier said, “Taking general
s
humanities’ courses will give me a well-rounded educa
tion and prepare me for home schooling my family
someday. Also, I am considering earning my master’s
degree in library science, and the B.A. in humanities
will be a good foundation to build on.” Whether stu
dents of other majors are required to take humanities’
classes or choose to major in a related field, these courses
provide the framework for students to succeed no mat
ter where God directs their future.
