S.P. HANDBALL
ROW 1, kneeling left to right: A. Martin, L. Jackvony. ROW 2: G. Lannigan, R. Haas, B,
Fairbend.
A new winter sport appeared on the horizon of Quaker athletics this year. The
S.P. Handball team, conceived exclusively by the shot putters of Moses Brown,
brought excitement and action to the Quaker campus. This new team exhibited
dauntless spirit and limitless perseverance although it was almost "K.O.’ed” out
of existence. Its dedication was not without result, however, as an undefeated
record was posted in the initial year of this team.
Although handball is a game of individual performances, the players displayed
tremendous team spirit. Consistently fine play was handed in by A1 Martin and
Captain Terry Haas. Lou Jackvony thrilled the team’s many ardent supporters with
his spectacular shots while Brian Fairbend provided the new and unusual shots
which constantly bewildered the opposition. Gary Lannigan gave the team its
needed depth. The play was always hot and heavy and the games sometimes be
came so spirited that many of the contests were ended on "doctor’s orders.”
This team was composed entirely of seniors, and it is hoped that the sophomores
and juniors will develop the interest and enthusiasm to establish a new tradition.
At this point, however, the future of the team looks dim. And though the chalk
lines of the old court may fade away, the spectacular thrills and great moments of
the S.P. Handball team will remain eternal.
