ABILENE WHIPPED

       Coach  Ted  Dawson  stated  that
       Abilene  should  come  to  Odessa
       real  concerned  about  their  con­
       test  w ith  the  Panthers.   They               f           yfV",
       should  have.  By  now  the  final
       score  has  soaked  in  realistically.

       fum ble  hurt.  It  hurt  worse  for
       the   Panthers   when   Abilene
       moved  to  only  15  yards  between
       them   and  six  points,  in  eight
       plays.  Later  they  scored  the  con- j                                   A   ; .
       version  for  one  point.  After  the

       down,  Abilene  intercepted  a  pass
        and  returned  to  Perm ian’s  30-
        yard  line.  Here  it  looked  like  a
        typical  Abilene  ball  game.  Nev­                         V V ' A -
        ertheless,  a  fighting  Panther  de­
        fense   held   tenaciously.   The
        Eagles  gained  one  yard  in  four
        downs.  Needing  two  yards  for  a
        first  down,  Crain  punted  out  for
        the  Panthers  w ith  a  39  yard
        boot!  An  Eagle  fumbled  his  turn
        at  his  own  24-yard  line  w here  it
        hit  and  Don  Jernigan  made  a  re­
        covery  there  for  the  oncoming
        Panthers!
          On  the first play  Perm ian  drew
        a  5-yard  penalty.  Keller  broke
        clear  on  the  second  try  and
        dashed  29  yards  for  the  T.D.
        Mike  Love  narrow ly  missed  the
        running  conversion  try.   The                                                                    r
        score  stood  7-6  with  1:30  left  in
        the  first  quarter.

       the  Eagles  lost  when  Panther
       Payte  broke  through  the  Abilene
       line  and  threw   the  Eagle  ball
       carrier  for  a  four  yard  loss  to
       stop  the  threatening  movement.
         The  last  quarter  was  full  of
       football  playing  and  both  kinds
      ) of  luck.  The  Eagles  fumbled  a
       second  time,  Huddleston  recov­  chaffner.  Crain  kicked  the  ex-'
       ering  for  the  Panthers.  First   ra  point  for  a  19  to  7  score  with
       play—Love  m ulled  7  yards.  Sec­  :27  left  to  play  in  the  game.
       ond  play—Crain  fumbled  and      Abilene  played  hard.  Passing
