P. 6
Introduction
This is the Kaydet's golden anniversary, the fiftieth
edition since 1918. The Kaydet Annual, its original title,
included both the College of Saint Thomas and Saint
Thomas Military Academy since the two schools were
located on the same campus. In 1920, and again in 1925,
volumes were not published due to production costs.
Out of the Kaydet Annual were form ed the Saint
Thomas College publication, the Aquinas, and the
Saint Thomas Military Academy yearbook, the Kaydet;
this distinction was made in 1930.
Since the first Kaydet was published, many further
changes have taken place. The name of the school has
been changed to simply Saint Thomas Academy; the
campus has been relocated in Mendota Heights; the
uniform has undergone many alterations. Further,
many more subtle transformations have occurred in
the school as well as in the students themselves.
Yet the individual is a product of the past. Saint
Thomas Academy itself exists as it does today because
of tradition. Those people involved with Saint Thomas
Academy are aware of their tradition, yet they do not
let past limitations inhibit future directions. The value
of firm roots in the past is in the stability they lend to
any custom or institution. Tradition gives this solidity to
Saint Thomas Academ y in correct proportion to its
necessary flexibility.
An examination of past ways of life is a good thing; it
can be of value in realizing the present state, and en
tertaining as well. The observance of a golden anniver
sary occasions a look at the past.
On the preceding page, and on each of the follow
ing division pages, is a pictorial glimpse at the institu
tion and students as they used to be. Along side this is
Saint Thomas Academy today, the product of the past.
The purpose of the 1970 Kaydet is em bodied in this
comparison — for this is graphic proof that Saint
Thomas Academy, based on tradition, is directed to
ward the future.
