Russian President Boris
Yeltsin dissolved
parliament in September
and announced new
elections in order to end
his long-running feud with
hard-liners. In a televised
speech that stunned the
world, Yeltsin said he was
dismissing the legislature
to pull the country out of
its political and economic
crisis. Riots broke out and
Yeltsin called in the army
to restore peace.

A multinational force, led
by the United States,
arrived in war-torn
Somalia. The goal was to
help feed the starving
population and bring
peace to a country which
had already lost 350,000
lives to fighting and
famine. Considered the
most powerful of the
warlords, Mohamed
