At $2 billion, the 2002 Olympic Winter Games in Salt Lake
City, Utah were the most expensive winter games ever. But
despite beefed-up security and underlying worry
over terrorist acts, this year's games, themed
"Light the Fire Within/' burned strong
with patriotism, pride and
amazing athletic performances.
Snowboarding became an official Olympic sport for the
first time this year, and the U.S. swept the competi
tion. Ross Powers, Danny Kass and Jarret Thomas
took the gold, silver and bronze in the
men's halfpipe (giving the U.S. its first
