MOSES BROW N, 1738-1836
As a man of far vision and indomitable spirit, Moses Brown kept the idea of a New England Yearly Meeting School
alive, culminating in the foundation of the Yearly Meeting School in Portsmouth, Rhode Island, in 1784.
The principal benefactor and guiding light of Moses Brown School was a friend to the poor and needy. He also serv
ed as an early day Holistic Physician to all, and a leading light of temperance. He was a total advocate of peace, while
being both a patriot and pacifist. In 1774, Moses Brown joined the Society of Friends, largely due to its firm stand
against slavery. Indeed, he became a leading anti-slavery champion of his time.
Moses Brown was also an inspired advocate of American manufacturing, particularly of cotton spinning. Samuel
Slater and his mill in Pawtucket, Rhode Island, received both the financial and moral support of Moses Brown.
Now in the 200th year of its founding, Moses Brown School and the Class of 1984 pay special recognition to Moses
Brown, treasurer of the school funds for more than fifty years, generous donor of the land to, and the fervent spirit in
the founding of this school.
