What a strange time sophomore year is! We started in
September sort of assuming we had it all figured out. I mean
we weren't freshmen anymore. But still, how far along were
we? Sure we moved up a flight of stairs, but we were still on
the south side of the building, the underclassman side. Not
quite ready for the north side yet. And not quite under the
same pressure as our junior friends. Things like SATS, Col­
lege choices, School rings, all those things are part of a
seemingly far off moment in time. And this moment in time
is certainly different from freshman year. We had a word in
English class for vocabulary — 'paradox'. That seems to me
to say something about this sophomore moment in time.
How can a person be more mature and less at the same
time? More confident and self assured, and yet more uncer­
tain? More excited and more frightened by change at the
same time? Sophomore year is pure paradox — a sopho­
more prayer I say often is "Dear Lord, help me to enjoy,
understand, and grow from this strange moment in time —
the halfway point of my moment in time in high school."
