William Figueroa, 12 years old,
a.k.a. the " potato kid ," waited by a
potato vendor's cart outside the
NBC studios in New York prior to
his appearance on the "Late Night
with David Letterman" show.
Figueroa and his family were bask­
ing in his new-found celebrity,
gained in June 1992, after he
spelled "potato" correctly during a
spelling bee and Vice President Dan
Quayle did not.

anniversary celebration of his voyage
to the New World.
