year vanishes as students begin to find their niche on campus. They start taking classes
more specific to their majors and find their work accumulates more quickly. "I study
about 30 hours a week as opposed to last year's 20-23 hours," Alisha Boley said.
Jorge Natal said, "My major is Pre-med; I am taking three science courses which
add up to 12 of my 16 credits. I spend a minimum of about 35 hours a week on studying
and homework." Some students do not experience a difference. Eric Penner said, "My
work load has not increased significandy from last year. It’s just my liberal arts classes
require a lot of busy work. I spend about 8-12 hours in the library every week, which is
not much different compared to last year."
While some students spend more rime studying, others spend more time in prac
tical training. Julie Kennedy and Tiffany Deose, along with other psychology majors,
have a practicum for their Intermediate Psychology class. "Working at Directions is first
hand experience at what it is like to work at a mental health center. Each day we go out
with different case management workers to visit their clients with mental health issues.
Each client we visit is diagnosed with severe problems anywhere from Schizophrenia to
Obsessive Compulsive Disorder," julie said.
