The buzzer sounds, and the crowd
erupts into cheers. That final shot
sealed the team’s victory in one of the
most competitive games of the year.
All athletic teams have their moments
of “glory” when they make the winning
play or block the shot that could have
cost them the game. But at other times,
the buzzer goes off, and the team loses
possession of the ball. Someone
slipped, and the dazed team must settle
for second.
Whether celebrating a victory or
enduring a defeat, those of us involved
in athletics or other competitions must
keep in perspective the source of our
abilities. We can compete with a spirit
of true power only when we realize our
complete dependence upon God for
strength. As II Samuel 22:32-33 says,
“For who is God save the Lord? and
who is a rock, save our God? God is
my strength and power: and He
maketh my way perfect.” We can give
our best only when we realize that our
best comes from God.
