Academic Decathlon’s
first year was a successful
one, according to sponsor
John Morrissey.
What did Academic De
cathlon do? The club met
to prepare for district,
state, and national compe
titions. During the compe
tition, Morrissey said
students took a compre
hensive test over a variety
of subjects from English
and math, to Fine Arts and
Natural Science. And,
according to Morrissey,

sporadically, but December
through February they
worked two or three times
a week before and after
school.
Principal Martha Novak
decided to start the club at
Ralston because every year
she said she received
mailings about the organi
zation and also a lot of
other schools were already
involved in it. “ I thought
we might be getting behind
the times,” Novak said.

In districts, which took
place in February, Ralston
placed sixth out of twelve
teams. Central High
School went on from state
to compete in national
competition where they
won third place in the
country out of 38 states.
California won first place,
and Texas placed second.
