CUP 2019

       Togo, Uganda take

          football honours

he annual Africa Down Under Cup – definitely
Tthe most competitive segment on the Africa
Down Under agenda – took place once again at
Langley Park with Togo winning the men’s competi-
tion for the second year in a row and Uganda taking
       out the first-ever women’s tournament.
This was the eighth edition of the event and a record
16 teams took part in a competition which is a joint ini-
tiative of Paydirt and Football West.
All of the teams were sponsored by Africa Down
Under participants and Football West chief executive
James Curtis said it was great to see big business get-
       ting behind community football.
“This is one of the most popular events on our calen-
dar and it is growing every year,” Curtis said.
“We know the mining delegates and African govern-
ment representatives love to come down and enjoy
the football and their involvement is very much appre-
ciated. Football is probably the most diverse sport in
the world and in Western Australia and this is a great
       celebration of African culture.
“It is important that we continue to celebrate diversity
within WA football and the broader community, and this
is another step forward to ensure the game is acces-
sible to anyone in WA,” he said.
Togo, sponsored by BDO, defeated Kenya (spon-
sored by Base Resources Ltd) 2-0 in the final of the
men’s tournament, while Uganda finished top of the
       women’s round-robin mini-tournament with Seychelles
       the runners-up.
The teams were joined in the post-cup celebrations
by Minister for Mines and Petroleum, Hon Bill Johnston,
who presented the winning trophies and Paydirt editor
Dominic Piper who awarded the player of the tourna-
ment awards. They were joined by Football West chair-
man and BDO global mining leader Sherif Andrawes.
Paydirt and Football West would also like to thank all
the companies who sponsored individual teams includ-
ing; PCF Capital Group, BDO, Gold Fields Ltd, Reso-
lute Mining Ltd, Base Resources, Capital Drilling Ltd,
Cardinal Resources Ltd, Walkabout Resources Ltd,
Force Commodities Ltd, Lycopodium Ltd and Arthur J
       Gallagher.
