Average Cost of Congestion per Truck
Delay associated with weekday traffic congestion on the national highway system totaled over
728 million hours in 2014. This amount of delay is the equivalent of 264,781 commercial truck
drivers sitting idle for an entire working year. Applying the 2014 national average operational cost
per hour of $68.09 equated to just over $49.6 billion in increased operational costs to the trucking
industry.
The cost per truck depends on where the truck drives, how many miles and operating sector.
The graph below shows how vehicle miles traveled affects the impact of congestion on a single truck.
