                                                                                      nanka means “to  go  south,”
              NAN/minami                                although this doesn’t imply something bad!    nanbu refers to a
                                                        southern part of a region.

                                                        Japan is an archipelago located east of China, but west of the United
                                                        States. It all depends on your geographical point of view. For a long
                                  east                  time,  Kyoto was Japan’s capital, but after  the Meiji  Restoration,
                                                        the new Japanese government settled in the city of Edo, which was

              TŌ/higashi                                renamed         Tōkyō, the capital of the East. At a train station

                                                        (yes, you guessed it!), you may see a sign labeled    higashi-
                                                        guchi (east exit or entrance).
