国 kuni was once used to designate a province, and we can see traces of its historical mean-
KOKU/kuni ing in the name of an island called Shikoku (four provinces). When you are out of the
country, you are in a gaikoku (foreign county). In 1937, Yasunari Kawabata published
his famous novel, Yukiguni (Snow Country).

We have already seen this kanji combined with the kanji for “book,” as 本店 hon’ten (main
store). The common word for “bookstore” is shoten. If you want to dine out for a
TEN/mise special occasion, you can find a good omise (a general term for stores, shops, and
