Pratikraman. They ask for forgiveness from all living creatures, no matter how minute, who they
may have harmed, knowingly or unknowingly, either by their deeds, or by words even by their
thoughts.
Samayik: Another prayer, called Samayik, lasting about 48 minutes, may be recited daily. .
Godless Religion: Jainism does not believe in God per se, but Jainism says that our deeds or
Karmas are like cosmic particles stuck to one's body and soul. To attain Nirvana, the ultimate
mission in life, discard all these Karmas. So far, very few besides twenty four prophets are
presumed to have attained Nirvana.
Anekantwad: Another major tenet of Jainism is anekantwad which means respecting other
people’s views. The principle is that our own perception of anything is not perfect. This also
raises the theory of syadwad or relativity.
Temples: Jains have built some of the most beautiful, intricately carved temples in India.
Hinduism and Jainism: Some believe that Jainism is an off-shoot of Hinduism but Jainism
is older than Hinduism. There is a mention of our first tirthankara Rishabhdev in Rig Veda, the
most ancient Hindu scripture. Due to basic tenet of nonviolence, Jains are not supposed to do
farming, thereby being dependent on Hindus for such needs.
How does Jainism Look Upon Other Religions: Jainism looks upon other religions with
respect as long as they are not in direct conflict with their basic tenets. To attain nirvana, one has
to shed all his karma by leading a righteous life.
Status of Women: Although men and women have an equal status in religion, in practice, it
is a male dominated society. Similar to Hindus, sons had rights to inherit property, and daughters
got dowries. Some years ago, the laws of India changed, giving equal rights to both. Digambars
believe that women cannot attain nivana because of some of their biological functions. Our
