first, I marveled at such occurrences and thought them to be strange. However, on reflection, it

wasn't strange at all. If Gautama was right when he said, “THE WORLD IS THE

MANIFESTATION OF MIND”, then it was only natural that those who had made spiritual

progress through reading should enjoy better health and livelihood.

Now that so many patients have been cured, Seicho-no-Ie is often considered a religion for

curing disease but is not so by any means. I had a strong aversion toward sick people. My father

wanted me to be a physician, but I studied literature instead. Now people who read my writings

are moved by them and undergo a complete change in their outlook on life and begin to lead a

bright and cheerful life. And as a natural consequence of this change, their diseases are healed.

Some people regard Seicho-no-Ie as a religion. It is up to them. However, I prefer to consider

it to be a non-denominational movement that enlightens one to truth through literary writing.”

SEICHO-NO-IE PERCEPTIONS OF AFTERLIFE/AFTER-DEATH (EXCERPTS)

1. Life knows living and does not know death. Life is another name for Reality. Reality has

neither beginning nor ending, neither destruction nor death. Hence life too has neither beginning

nor ending, neither destruction nor death. Life is above the measure of time, and also above the

measure of age.

2. Sin, sickness and death are not God’s creations. Therefore, although they appear to wear
