3. ROLES, FUNCTIONS AND QUALIFICATIONS OF ADVISORS
3.1 Assignment of the Advisor and Co-Advisor
DBA students will be assigned two advisors. The first is the Principal Advisor, assigned by
MSSU, and the other is the Co-Advisor, from HSLU-W. Their role is to guide, counsel, and
coach the DBA student during the Research Prospectus, Thesis Proposal and Thesis processes.
These advisors will take a leading role to ensure the required academic standards are met.
Firstly, a Co-Advisor will be appointed by HSLU-W to the DBA student, usually shortly after
having attended the Joint Study Weeks, Lucerne. The Co-Advisor will guide and support the
student to develop the draft of a Research Prospectus for submission to MSSU - to ensure that
the student is prepared for the JSWs, Bangkok. Usually, the DBA student will meet with their
Co-Advisor twice in the time period between attending the JSWs, Lucerne and the JSWs,
Bangkok.
Secondly, a Principal Advisor will be appointed by MSSU to the DBA student within 30 days
of the submission of the draft of the Research Prospectus. During the JSWs, Bangkok, the first
meeting between the appointed Principal Advisor and the DBA student will take place to discuss
the draft of their Research Prospectus.
3.2 Roles and Responsibilities of Advisors
• Principal Advisor
The appointed Principal Advisor is primarily responsible for supporting, providing advice &
feedback, coaching and mentoring the DBA student on the development of the Final Research
Prospectus, Thesis Proposal, the Proposal Defense, as well as the Thesis and Thesis Oral
Defense. The Principal Advisor also has the resposiblility of encouraging DBA students to
remain on schedule and monitor the student’s progress throughout the key stages of the DBA
programme to ensure the DBA student reaches the quality of academic standards required.
Specific roles and responsibilities of the Principal Advisor
The Principle Advisor has to ….
(1) Arrange the first official meeting with DBA students during JSWs Bangkok and reserve
sessions to provide guidance for the student elaborating on and finalizing the Research
Prospectus.
(2) Provide an active role with reagrds to response and contact with the DBA students. Provide
timelines between the DBA student and both advisors for monitoring the student’s
advancement and progress in all phases of the DBA programme. The Principical Advisor
together with the Co-Advisor are encouraged to meet with their DBA students at least once
per semester.
