• Mathematical estimates and direct measurements both suggest that


                 under conditions of an usual hemodialysis (blood flow 200– 300 ml ⁄


                 minute, dialysate flow 500 ml ⁄ minute, weight gain 2.5 kg)




                    - At least 1.5 l of backfiltration will occur with high-flux membranes


             (KUF 40 ml ⁄ hour · mmHg).



                    - No backfiltration occurs with low-flux membranes (KUF 6ml⁄ hour ·


             mmHg)




                    - Backfiltration generally cannot be avoided in high-flux dialysis and


             may occur along a significant portion of the dialyzer length.
