A Realisation
I come from a middle-class family. My parents’ monthly income is only RM5 000. Hence,
we lead a frugal life as my parents have to save for our education and also for rainy days. However,
like any other teenager, I aspire the good things in life like branded clothes and technological
gadgets. I can’t ask my parents for money as they are paying through their noses for the never-
ending bills and ensuring there is food for all six of us. Besides, being the eldest son, I must set a

good example to my younger siblings. So, I decided to work part-time to earn some pocket money
to buy my material needs.
After school I would work at a classy restaurant where I would wash the dirty crockery and
utensils. It is hard work but I needed the money. So, I would work seven days a week for this cause.
Many rich people come to the restaurant dressed in branded clothes and shoes, even infants. I
would look admiringly at their clothes and technological gadgets.
One day, a well-dressed couple walked into the restaurant, dressed in Gucci. They had a
toddler dressed in Dolce & Gabbana. The parents sat in the restaurant and took out their iPhones.
They were so engrossed in their phones that they did not notice the toddler moving towards the
glass tanks where the live sea creatures were kept. To my dismay, the child leaned over a glass tank
containing live crabs! As I feared, the child fell into the tank and the parents were oblivious to it!
I screamed and rushed towards the drowning child and grabbed him. My scream alerted the
parents who walked slowly towards their child. I was puzzled to see their reaction. The child was
crying loudly but it did not affect them. The rich parents just took the crying child from my arms
without even a word of thank you.
I smiled at these rich parents. They can only provide designer clothes and wealth for the poor
kid but not love. I am blessed to have parents who love and care for me. Indeed, all that glitters is
not gold. I realised that day that no wealth can ever make up for love – love is crucial!
