Notes from st john’s
In spite of the difficulties caused by the
pandemic, the periodic demands of
running Anglican churches come back as
of old. The upcoming exercise for St
John’s is a Quinquennial Review which is
taking place in June when the architect
will be requiring ladders and assistance
to gain access to and inspect the various
parts of the building and grounds.
After all the building, repairs and
decorating work that’s been going on, it
should be encouraging to know that the
church is structurally sound as are the
electrical circuits, the lightning
conductor and the gas system, all with
the certificates to prove it and insurance
to cover it. Of course, in the end
analysis, the archdeacon has the final
authority in church building matters. Yet,
it could also be noted that much of the
strategic thinking and detailed work is
done by senior lay people of the
congregation, mostly amateurs, who, in
liaison with the architect, devote a lot of

time and energy to
ensuring that things
are done properly and
that the building
continues as a beacon
of our faith.
The severity of the virus and its variants
has cowed many. Concepts such as
optimism or hope for the future have
not come easily, but lately some green
shoots of vitality appear to be surfacing.
At St John’s, the former rota systems
whereby people fulfilled the many roles
which need to be done to ensure the
dynamism of church life, are being re-
considered. Along with the up-dating of
the 2014 Mission Action Plan, in the light
of a new Benefice Plan, this is expected
to call into play the ingenuity and the
spirit of the initiators, of whom some
enthusiasts will be from the
congregation of St John’s’.
