SPINAL CORD STIMUL A TOR SURGERIES
Before getting SCS a doctor may ask you to be psychologically examined
to ensure your pain is not increased due to disorders such as anxiety and
depression.
There are two parts to SCS surgery. First is the trial. This surgery is
to see if the device is a good option for the patient. The trial is also the time
where the doctor pinpoint the points in your spine to place the wires. During
the surgery the doctor will make an incision in your lower back. With the
help of Fourscopy (a special kind of X-ray) the doctor will carefully insert
the lead wires into the epidural spots in your spine. Typically for the trial the
generator will be outside of the boy. The trial period for this device is usualy
a week. Once the trial is over if the patients decides it was not helpful wire
can be removed. If the patient decides that SCS is for them then they move on
to the next step of getting the ful SCS implantation.
unlike the trial during a SCS implantation surgery the generator is
placed in the lower back of the patient just under the skin. The lead wires are
then replaced with sterile wires and anchored down by sutures to decrease
migration.
