5. การเนนเสียงหนักในคําประสม (compound words)

คาประสม คือ คําที่เกิดจากการนําเอาคํา 2 คํา มารวมเปนคําเดียวกัน ทําใหเกิด
ํ
คําใหมที่มีความหมายใกลเคียงกับความหมายเดิมหรือเปลี่ยนความหมายใหมได เชน

bed (เตียง) + room (หอง) = a bedroom (หองนอน)

card (บัตร) + phone (โทรศัพท) = a cardphone (โทรศัพทใชบัตร)

school (โรงเรียน) + bus (รถประจําทาง) = a schoolbus (รถโรงเรียน)

hand (มือ) + bag (ถุง, กระเปา) = a handbag (กระเปาถือ)

การเขียนคําประสม มี 3 แบบ คือ

1. เขียนติดกัน เชน

a classroom, a bedroom, a sweetheart, a highway, oversea

2. เขียนแยกกัน เชน

a fountain pen, a ceiling fan, cooking oil, a swimming suit

3. เขยนแยกกัน มี hyphen คั่นระหวางคํา เชน
