PELETERÍA
Aunque el país en los tiempos de la colonia fue un

cación de sillas de montar y accesorios, es la artesanía que
ha tenido un mayor desarrollo.
Es en la Región Este en donde mayormente surgieron
y se mantienen muchos de estos talleres para suplir la de-
manda de sillas y demás aparejos de carga, tiro y montura
empleados durante la zafra de la caña de azúcar y en los
hatos ganaderos.
Estos talleres de talabartería también confeccionan
sombreros, correas y taburetes así como cananas para
armas blancas (machetes, colines y cuchillos) y armas de
fuego.
Para la fabricación de sillas y asientos también se
utilizan cueros con sus pelos, mayormente en Villa Los
Almácigos, provincia Santiago Rodrígue,z y en otras comu-
nidades de su entorno cercanas a la frontera con Haití.
En los últimos años han surgido artesanos urbanos
-principalmente en Santo Domingo- que elaboran finos
artículos de piel y líneas de productos de cuero repujado
como bolsos, cinturones y bisutería.

LEATHER-MAKING
Even though in colonial times the country was a major
facture of saddles and accessories was the one with the

many of these workshops continue to supply the demand
for saddles and other cargo carrying paraphernalia for
loading, shooting and riding in the planting of sugarcane
and in the livestock landholding.
These tannery shops also make hats, belts and stools,
as well as cartridge belts for firearms, machetes, pangas
and knives.
For making chairs and seats they also used pelts with
the hair intact, especially in Villa Los Almácigos of Santiago
Rodríguez and other communities around it near the border
with Haiti.
In the past years urban artisans have arisen, principally
from Santo Domingo who make fine leather articles and
embossed leather lines of products such as bags, belts and
costume jewelry.
