individual’s society. Since sports is concerned
with the whole individual, one should have the
knowledge of culture and social order and how
the processes of socialization takes place through
sports. It will help the society to know the
importance of sports in their life style. They can
get encouraged and come forward for
participation in the sports activities to realize the
importance of socialization through sports.
The sociology of sport is increasingly disputed
ideological territory in Social Science. On the one
hand is the uncritical descriptive statistical
examination of sports activity created by an
admiring journalism. In the same camp is the
celebratory history of sports and sport figures
that redeems its ugly aspects by enlarging the
heroic efforts of individual players and teams.
Joining with these extensive statistical
presentations and their selected historical forays
is a safe and bland sociology of sport that
trivializes and depoliticizes sports in particular
and leisure time pursuits generally.
Sports is a viable means towards socialization
because it provides rich opportunities in most of
the social processes involved in the transmission
of cultural behaviour. Through sports and group
physical activities socialization takes place in
home, schools, college playgrounds and any other
place where sports activities takes place.
Among the major introductory textbooks of
the past 20 years, very little attention is paid to
the sociology of sports.
