From “X marks the spot” to “Solve for X”. This is the go-to letter in English alphabets to represent
something unknown. The idea is believed to have come from mathematician Rene Descartes, who used
the last three letters of the alphabets to represent unknown quantities in his book ‘The Geometry’. He
chose a, b and c to stand for known quantities. From known quantities a, b and c to unknown x, y,
and z. Creativity lies in the path from known to unknown. As you discover the unknown your cycle
starts again for further quests. Lots of avenues are open to you. Right decision at the right time is very
important. Delayed decisions may lead you to disaster.
A child, as young as 5, will start showing affinity towards some subjects. Parents and teachers can
identify this and plan to develop this interest. Build a platform to nurture creative thinking among
children. This will go a long way to bring out the best in talented children with scientific aptitude.
Fostering intelligent children, nurturing their talent and guiding them to the right direction rest with
the educators all around. Parents and teachers play a major role in this aspect. As the children grow,
they understand their responsibility to self and to the society. They should then think seriously about
their future contributions to the society and plan gradually to achieve them.
When children learn science not merely to know things but to know themselves, not merely to do but
to compel themselves to do things, think freely and understand the concepts, an array of questions boil
out from their minds. The quest for finding answers to these will lead them to discover things which
were unknown to them till then. To reach this level of education a child should have rigorous discipline
of the powers of observation, of reasoning and the will to reach the roots of every concept related to
the subject. Nothing is impossible in this world. Remember… ‘Even the wingless leaves rise high like
birds when a powerful storm comes’ Try hard and bring out the best in you with true dedication and
hard work.
As I wind up let me recall the words of a great personality, an educator himself Joseph Addison…
“Education is a companion which no misfortune can depress, no crime can destroy, no enemy can
alienate and no depotism can enslave. At home a friend, abroad an introduction in solitude a solace
and in society an ornament. It chastens vice, it guides virtue, it gives, at once, grace and it governs
genius. Without it, what is man? A splendid slave, a reasoning savage…
Best Wishes to all the young generations of this world.
