I’d like to live in a yellow
submarine but I’d like to be
more “under the sea in an
octopus’s garden in the shade”
and “I’d ask my friends to come
and see”, “we would be warm
below the storm in our little
hideaway beneath the waves”,
“we would sing and dance
around”, “we would shout and
swim about the coral”, “No one
there to tell us what to do”, “we would be so happy”. These words were written and sung
by Ringo Starr and became another song for children by The Beatles: “Octopus’s Garden”.
The idea for the song came to Starr when he was on a boat that belonged to the actor
Peter Sellers in Sardinia in 1968. The captain
of the boat told Starr how octopuses move
around the ocean floor collecting shells,
stones and other shiny objects to build
gardens around their caves. The musician
had temporarily withdrawn from the
recording sessions for the new album after
becoming fed up with the growing tension
in the group. This underwater tale has
become an illustrated book.
The Beatles or the Fab Four, as the Beatles were called, were the best-selling band of all
time and many consider them the best musical group on Earth. They were a British icon.
They were from Liverpool in England. The group was made up of four people, John
Lennon, rhythm guitarist and vocalist, Paul McCartney, bass guitarist and vocalist, George
Harrison, lead guitarist and vocalist and Ringo Starr, drummer and vocalist.
They were the first British band to write their own songs and music. Hundreds of
hysterical and worshipful fans followed them everywhere they performered. The media
talked of Beatlemania.
Although the second part of the 1960s was very successful and the Beatles released a
number of hit singles, including Hey Jude, Let It Be or Get Back, the members of the band
started to quarrel and pursue their own interests. In 1970 they finally broke up after 8
successful years. All of the Beatles started solo careers: John Lennon sang with his wife
Yoko Ono, Paul McCartney started a new group called the Wings. Ringo Starr and George
Harrison also began to sing alone. Sadly, in 1980 John Lennon was murdered by a
madman in New York and in 2001 George Harrison died of cancer, Paul McCartney and
Ringo Starr are still active.
