GI
Whipple’s procedure or pancreaticoduodenectomy is the removal of the head
of the pancreas, duodenum, part of the jejunum, common bile duct, gallbladder,
and part of the stomach.
Complications
■ Atelectasis, pneumonia, and respiratory failure
■ DVT and pulmonary embolism
■ UGI bleeding
■ Gastritis, esophagitis, dumping syndrome, peritonitis
■ Anastomotic leak: Tachycardia, tachypnea, fever, abdominal pain, anxiety
and restlessness, subcutaneous emphysema (crepitus), and sepsis
■ Hepatorenal failure
Management
■ Provide standard postoperative care, including administration of analgesics
and provision of pulmonary care.
■ Assess for GI bleeding.
■ Provide DVT prophylaxis. Encourage early ambulation.
