NUCLEUS: Eccentric, kidney or egg-shaped,
indented, or elongated
Nucleoli: 1-2
Chromatin: Fine, dispersed
CYTOPLASM: Abundant with irregular borders; may
contain ingested material
Granules: Many coarse azurophilic (burgundy-
colored)
Vacuoles: May be present
REFERENCE INTERVAL: Macrophages reside in
tissues, such as bone marrow, spleen, liver, lungs,
and others. Rarely, they are seen in the peripheral
blood during severe sepsis.
