SYOK Study
2.1 Human Skeletal System
1. The bones in the human body forms a system known as the human skeletal system.
2. The human skeletal system consists of five main skeletons:
Skull - Protects the brain from injury
Ribs - Protects the internal organs
Backbone - Supports the body
Hand bones - For support and mobility
Leg bones - For support and mobility
3. All these main skeletons have specific functions in the human body.
4. Without the skeletal system, humans cannot stand or walk perfectly.
5. Joints are places where two or more bones are joined together. The circled parts in the diagram above
are the locations of the joints in the human body.
6. We need joints to move our body. Joints allow the movement and flexibility of the body.
7. Functions of joints:
(a) The joint at the neck bone allows the movements of the head by turning or rotating.
(b) The joints at the shoulders, hands and backbone allow the movements of the upper body.
(c) The joints at the shoulders allow the movements of the arms backward, forward, to the sides or to
make rotations.
(d) The joints at the knees and hips allow the legs to bend and straighten.
