social opinions. In other words, we are avoiding excess or extremes in our everyday
living, relationship with friends and leisurely activities. When you want to eat 1,000
chips and you eat only 1, this is an example of moderation. Eliminating or lessening
extremes in life means emphasizing perfect amounts of everything, not indulging in
too much of one thing, hence moderation.
In groups, study the list of words which are synonyms of the quality ‘moderation’. Do
• find the meanings of the words
• construct sentences with the words to show the correct use
• read out the sentences to the class
Activity 1 the following:
• students should try to weed out sentences that do not show the meaning of the
words clearly
• add on to the list of words provided
List of words: self-restraint, restraint, self-control, self-discipline, moderateness, non-
indulgence, leniency, fairness
Practising moderation can also be applied to our ‘needs’ and ‘wants’.
In groups, talk about the meaning of ‘needs’ and ‘wants’.
Activity 2
Give examples of situations concerning ‘needs’ and ‘wants’.
Write out the situations in the form of dialogues or conversations.
In groups, present a short sketch with moderation as the main theme.
• Decide on the situation or plot and theme
• Write out the script
