It is the common name used for ningyõ jõruri − ningyõ means puppet and jõjuri
refers to a kind of chanted narration.
Began in the Edo Period (1603 – 1868) in Osaka.
It is a popular form of entertainment for commoners.
It is the fusion of three art forms – puppetry, storytelling and music accompaniment
(three-stringed Japanese lute, shamisen).
Large-size puppets are used (usually half-life-size).
The most famous bunraku play is Chushingura: The Treasury of Loyal Retainers
which deals with herosim, loyalty and revenge.
The main puppeteer is called omozukai who manipulates the head and the
features, and the right arm of the puppet.
The audience are able to see the omozukai who is often dressed in colourful attire.
Two lower-ranked puppeteers are dressed in black robes and hoods, so that they
are ‘invisible’ to the audience. They are in charge of moving the left arm and the
legs.
