11 The Simple Past Tense

(a) The verb ‘to be’ in the past tense is used as follows:

• I was surprised to see him just now.
• We were in the house yesterday.
• She was all alone this afternoon.
(b) Regular verbs in the past tense end in ‘d’ or ‘ed’.
• He jogged around the lake before dinner.
• Nina cycled to school when she stayed in Kedah.
(c) Irregular verbs form their past tense forms differently.
• blow – blew • leave – left
• grow – grew • sing – sang
(d) Some verbs do not change in spelling.
• put – put • hit – hit • let – let
