We use the simple past tense to talk about an action or an event that happened at a
specif c time in the past.

Subject Verb Complement
I competed in a volleyball match.
He/ She/ It jumped over all the hurdles.
You/ We/ They ran the 1500-metre race.
Note: A complement is a word or a phrase that completes the meaning of a sentence.
Regular/Irregular Verbs
• The spelling rules for the simple past tense of regular verbs are as follows:
Rules Examples
Most verbs, add -ed awarded, collected, painted
Verbs ending in -e, add -d agreed, believed, decided
Verbs ending in vowel + consonant, double clap − clapped, f t − f tted,
the consonant and add -ed hug − hugged
Verbs ending in consonant + -y, change -y cry – cried, fry – fried, worry – worried
to -i and add -ed
• The simple past tense of irregular verbs is not formed in the same way and they are
spelt differently. Some irregular verbs remain unchanged.
e.g. beat – beat, do − did, find − found, hit – hit, leave – left, rise – rose
