WELCOME

A letter from our dean, Dr. Marcia Tate Arunga

 March 2, 2021

 Dear Evergreen State College, Tacoma ? Sankofa Learning community;

It gives me great pleasure to welcome everyone to our college as we commemorate
Founders Day. How appropriate it is to pause and celebrate the 93rd birthday of our
founder, Dr. Maxine Mimms. She returns on March 2nd to address Evergreen, Tacoma
on her continued engagement with social justice, community building and education.
We are grateful for her long life, wisdom and clarity of thought.

We also invite our distinguished alumni to virtually return to revisit Evergreen, Tacoma
on Founders Day. Revisiting your college is a reminder of how you once stretched
yourself to achieve your goals. For some, college is where you realized that you were
smart. For others, it was a challenge and a struggle, but you persevered and
completed. Your precocious curiosity is what brought you to a culture of learning and
it became a natural part of your life. Others look to you for wisdom, guidance and
direction. Revisiting Evergreen Tacoma is a sacred act.

Today, our reputation stands on the remarkable work demonstrated by our alumni in
the greater Pacific Northwest and beyond. It is evidence of the fidelity of our motto,
Enter to learn depart to serve. As a result, we dedicate the Winter issue #9 of our
Sankofa News to our Evergreen Tacoma alumni. We know that we have only tapped a
small reservoir to produce this publication. We invite all of our alumni to submit
examples of their achievements for future acknowledgment. From the core of our
being, we thank you for choosing Evergreen Tacoma as your college and welcome you
 back home.

We need your help to meet our Fall quarter 2021 recruitment goals by June 1st 2021.
The application fee is currently waived for prospective students. Please contact Carl
Forbes at forbesc@evergreen.edu. Please share the good news about Evergreen
Tacoma with your friends and relatives.

 Stay safe,
 Marcia Tate Arunga, PhD
