Verb group phrase = Vgp
Verb can consist of one or more than one element.
Verb group can divides into 2 types : Lexical verb and
Auxiliary verb
- Lexical verb (V) refers to meaning of the verb
- Auxiliary verb (AUX) refers to additional
element of the verb including MODALITY, ASPECT,
VOICE, TENSE
1. TENSE
There are 2 tenses in English: PRESENT and PAST
2. MODALITY (MOD)
- It expresses a state of affair such as possible, necessary.
- The Modal auxiliary are will, would, can, could, may, might,
shall, should, must, ought to.
3. ASPECT
There are 2 kinds of aspect: PERFECT and PROGRESSIVE
- Perfect aspect : have + -en form
- Progressive aspect : be + -ing form
4. VOICE
A sentence or utterance is in the ACTIVE or the PASSIVE. The
active is a majority of the sentences and utterance. It is not
overtly on the tree diagram.
