How we teach Maths:
Maths is taught every day at Bolton Parish Church
School. We use a variety of scheme resources to
develop children’s skills in number, shape,
measures and data handling.
Children are taught to use a variety of formal written methods for cal-
culations as well as developing mental strategies.
Children will use practical resources all through school as well as learn-
ing how to record their work.
There is a focus on learning multiplication tables from year 1 and there
is an expectation that most children will know all of the times tables
up to 12x12 by the end of year 4.
Children are encouraged to apply their mathematical skills in a variety
of different contexts and there is a whole school focus on problem
solving (reasoning).
How we teach Topic
At Bolton Parish Church CE School we design our topic curriculum to
meet the needs of the History, Geography, Art and Design Technology
requirements of the National Curriculum. Topics may focus on one of
these subjects of a combination of them all. Science, RE and computing
are taught as individual subjects. These topics are designed to be crea-
tive and will develop investigative and research skills as well as develop-
ing subject knowledge. Opportunities are also provided to develop
reading, writing and maths skills through these subjects.
