1.5.3 Spallation Neutron Sources

Neutron emitted from spallation machine is directed
according the collision of heavy particles with a target
materials. The energy of neutron is mainly within a
range of MeV classified as fast neutron. Moderation of
fast neutron is required to obtain thermal neutron. The
operation of spallation neutron source is relied on the
avaibility of heavy particles which is generated in ac-
celerator which is powered by electricity. A design and
components of target material is shown in Figure 1.5
and layout of neutron source from spallation machine
is ilustrated in Figure 1.6. Target usually comprised of

heavy materials such lead, mercury or etc. Heavy par-
ticles such as ion, positron, electron or proton are used
to collide on the heavy target object before neutron is
produced. Those particles are accelerated before col-
liding with the target materials. The intensity of neu-
tron emitted from the target material is dependent on
