The scanning of the object in residual stress mea-
surement using neutron diffraction, three scanning di-
rections are required. The direction of scanning are
over the linear, normal and orthogonal directions as
noted by number 1,2 and 3. Illustration for these three
direction of scanning is given in Figure 4.2.

The orthogonality of scanning direction must be main-
tained so that the hoop stress normal to each direc-
tion is maintained. This is maintained by placing the
detector is always in 90◦ relative to the incoming and
diffracted beam.
