Lesson 8: Homophones and

            Homographs




                                         There once was a young girl named Cindrella.
                                         She had an evil stepmother and cruel step-sister.

                                         She had  grown amazing plants for the step-
                                         mother without a groan. The step-sisters made

                                         her do their chores there and find a perfect scent
                                         without giving her a cent. After having seen her
                                         sister’s hair  dyed, her father got shocked and

                                         died. Cindrella had to go to a party but had no
                                         special dress. She wondered  where she would
                                         get something special to wear.





            Homophones are the words that have the same sound but different
            spellings and meanings.


                          Homo           +      phone




                          same           +      audio/sound


            The following words are pronounced exactly in a same way, yet they
            differ in terms of spellings and meanings:
                          there          :      that place/thing
                          their          :      belonging to them
                          grown          :      mature
                          groan          :      a deep sound
                          died           :      passed away
                          cent           :      100th part of a US dollar
                          scent          :      the characteristics of a pleasant smell
