5 Grammar Time
5.1. Read the following sentences and note the structure.
a. They had been talking for half an hour
before Tony arrived.
b. Suku had been jogging so he was tired.
c. I had been waiting for thirty minutes
when the bus arrived.
d. They had been making a cake for the
whole day.
e. I had been presenting my paper so my
cell phone was off.
f. Ronaldo had been playing for
Manchester United before he went to
Real Madrid.
The above sentences are in the structure s + had been + v4 + o
with a supportive clause.
This form of tense is called the Past Perfect Continuous/Progressive
Tense.
This tense is used to show something that started in the past and
continued up until another time in the past.
