5.2. Read  the  following  sentences and note the  use of

                ‘although’ and ‘in spite of’.


                a.   Although he was sick, he didn’t take a rest.

                b.   In spite of his sickness, he didn’t take a rest.

                c.   Although it was raining, they continued


                      the match.

                d.   In spite of the rain, they continued the

                      match.

                e.   Although we love our country, we have

                      to go abroad for job.


                f.   In spite of the love for our country, we

                      have to go abroad for job.

                g.   Although she was poor, she helped her neighbours.


                h.   In spite of her poverty, she helped her neighbours.



               Although and in spite of are used to show a contrast. That is

              when an action is unlikely in the given situation.
               Although is used before the situation when it is in a complete

              sentence.

               In spite of is used before the situation when it is in a noun or

              noun phrase.

               Although, even though and though are similar and in spite of
              and despite are also similar.
