Management

1. Pharmacology

a. Anticoagulant – heparin therapy (intravenous/oral)

 For pregnant women the only treatment is heparin

b. Fibrinolytic therapy

 Extremely weak patients need care in the intensive therapy unit. For
thrombus dissolution, fibrinolytic therapy such as streptokinase 25

000 units, iv is given for 30 minutes, followed by streptokinase 10 000

units, iv is given every hour for up to 12-72 hours.
