                                      NOTE
               1. The Caring Assessment Tool (CAT—version IV) determines the degree
           of nurse caring as perceived by patients. It is a theoretically-based instrument
           taken from Watson’s Theory of  Human Caring (1979; 1985). The instrument
           has been revised twice, first to allow for use in multiple settings and secondly
           to evaluate reliability and establish construct validity (Duffy et al, 2007). The
           questions are directed at how nurses perform specific activities within the
           healthcare situation. Responses indicate how frequently an activity occurs.
           The CAT consists of 36 items and is designed to be completed by the recipi-
           ent of care (the patient).
