52 ■ Develop your leadership skills
Providing an example
‘Leadership is example,’ someone once said to me. Certainly it
is impossible to think of leadership without example. It may
take many shapes and forms, but it has to be there.
In the context of communication, you can think of example as
a prime means of communicating a message through ‘body
language’ or non-verbal communication. Or, as the modern
management proverb puts it, you have to ‘walk the talk’.
A short course on leadership
The six most important words…
‘I admit I made a mistake.’
The five most important words…
‘I am proud of you.’
The four most important words…
‘What is your opinion?’
The three most important words…
‘If you please.’
The two most important words…
‘Thank you.’
The one most important word…
‘We.’
And the last, least important, word…
‘I.’
