PATHOPHYSIOLOGY
• Decrease in proteoglycan content in the matrix
• Articular cartilage become softening, fraying, flake off
• The wear and tear process, the cartilage becomes thin and
eroded completely from bones
• The underlying bone (subchondrial bone - providing support
for the cartilage of the articular surface) surface become
exposed
• The unprotected bone become sclerotic (dense and hard)
