Post-operative Care
• Regular vital sign check-ups.
• Delivery of oxygen through a mechanical ventilator, mask or nasal prong for as long as the
patient requires.
• Lack of lung capacity requires physiological modifications. Therefore, fluid administration is
limited to prevent fluid overload / pulmonary oedema.
• Once the patient is conscious and the vital signs are stable, the height of the headboard is
30 – 45 degree
• Position change is important where after pneumonectomy surgery, the patient will be
placed in a supine position to the lateral position next to the surgery every hour and not
placed in the non -surgical part position. This allows fluid to fill the space and prevents
mediastinal shift.
