A Member of the Texas A&M University System, TAMIU is an
international university, poised at the Gateway to Mexico
and serving as the cultural and intellectual hub of a vibrant
multilingual and multicultural community. It provides over
7,500 students with a learning environment anchored by
the highest quality programs built on a solid academic
foundation in the arts and sciences. Programs focus on
developing undergraduate and graduate offerings with
a progressive international agenda for global study and
understanding across all disciplines.
History
Texas A&M International University will celebrate its fiftieth
anniversary in 2020. This prestigious institution started
in August of 1970 as “A&I University at Laredo” and in
September of 1977 it became “Laredo State University”. On
September 1, 1989 it became a member of The Texas A&M
University System and was named Texas A&M International
University in 1993.
The 74th Texas Legislature approved an expansion to
four-year status in the Fall of 1995, further authorizing the
University to develop joint degree programs with Mexican
and Canadian institutions of higher education. Additional
authorization since has permitted the development of
doctoral level programs.
Accolades
TAMIU has been recognized both in Texas and nationwide
in several distinguished rankings: It is ranked FIRST in Texas
for Student Retention (2017 Student Success Ratings by
Eduventures); THIRD in the nation among colleges with

the highest income mobility rate (New York Times); THIRD
in Texas for Mathematics Majors); FOURTH in the nation
for “Best Bang for the Buck” among Southern Colleges
(Washington Monthly College Guide); SIXTH in Texas for Best
Colleges for biology Majors; SIXTH among 30 Best Texas
Universities (Financeopedia Review); and was ranked in
the TOP 20 Public Schools in the 2018 U.S. News and World
Report’s Best Colleges ranking.
Towards the Future
Today the TAMIU campus recently started construction on
Phase VII of its master plan – a new, magnificent Academic
Hall that will include state of the art laboratories. As a whole,
the campus complex represents an investment in higher
education in Texas of over $250 million.
Now a regional University of choice, TAMIU is accredited
by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools
Commission on Colleges to award baccalaureate, masters,
and doctorate degrees. It is home to five colleges: The College
of Arts and Sciences, the A. R. Sanchez, Jr. School of Business,
the College of Education and the College of Nursing and
Health Sciences with its Dr. F. M. Canseco School of Nursing
and University College, all of which are accredited either by
State, National, or International institutions.
Through instruction, faculty and student research, and
public service, TAMIU improves the quality of lives for
citizens of the border region, the State of Texas, and national
and international communities.
